Bio/Research
I completed my undergraduate degree at the Lahore University of Management Sciences in Pakistan, and went to the University of Southern California, USA, to do my PhD in Economics. After completing my PhD in 2013, I taught undergraduate Economics at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University as a sessional lecturer.
My current research and expertise are in the fields of international economics and macroeconomics. I have extensively worked with disaggregated firm-level data, including for my PhD dissertation that investigated the link between trade liberalization and firm efficiency, particularly in the textile and clothing industries. My future research goals involve continuing to develop my work on global firm-to-firm trade networks, household finance, as well as conducting policy-oriented research in other areas of the broadly defined discipline of development economics.
Some of my ongoing research projects include:
- “Gossiping Macroeconomic Expectations in Pakistan,” with Samreen Malik and Jordan Norris.
- “Costly Imports: Exchange Rate Shocks and Trade Misreporting by Firms,” with Karrar Hussain.
- “News Shocks, Consumer Confidence, and Business Cycles,” with Syed M. Hussain.
- “Keeping the enemies closer: Exporting behavior of firms under conflict,” with Karrar Hussain.
- “Firm-to-firm networks and sourcing strategy of importers,” with Bilal M. Khan and Karrar Hussain.
