Matthew Smith is an expert in Anne Innis Dagg’s legacy, chloroplast biogenesis, intracellular protein trafficking, involvement with Laurier, membrane protein structure and function, molecular plant cell biology, protein targeting and import into chloroplasts and protein-protein interactions.

Biography
I received my PhD in Biology from the University of Waterloo in 2000 and my BSc in Biology from Wilfrid Laurier University in 1995.
Prior to joining Laurier, I was a postdoctoral fellow at Rutgers University, Newark, NJ, and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (2000-2004).
The overall focus of my research is to understand the mechanism of targeting and import of proteins into chloroplasts as a model for intracellular protein trafficking. We use a combination of molecular biology, biochemistry and biophysical approaches to understand the structural and functional details of the chloroplast protein import machinery.
