Bio/Research

I grew up singing in choir, so it is no surprise that much of the music I compose is for the voice. My music has been performed in twenty-nine countries, and recent performance venues include the Great Wall of China, the White House and the Musikverein. My music has been performed by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Chamber Choir, Elmer Iseler Singers, National Youth Orchestra of Canada, National Youth Choir of Canada, European Union Youth Orchestra, Orchestra London, the Art of Time Ensemble, Rolston String Quartet, Dennis Wick Canadian Wind Orchestra, and musica intima.

I studied at the University of British Columbia (BMus) and the University of Toronto (MMus, DMA), and my music has been recorded on twenty-four albums, including a Juno nominated disc. My work is published by G. Schirmer, Boosey & Hawkes, Hal Leonard and many others.

Creatively, I am interested in creating works which are accessible and immediate. Writing music which is barrier free, music to be used within the community. Academically my research is focused on two areas: first, music inspired by Beethoven Op. 132; and second, music inspired by place/space. Pedagogically, I mentor composers on writing accessible music for the voice.

I am currently a mentor composer with the Amadeus Choir of Greater Toronto’s Choral Creation Lab. I also sit on the board of Choirs Ontario, and the editorial board of Choral Canada’s peer reviewed journal.
