Bio/Research

I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Classics and Master of Arts in Ancient Greek at Western where I taught for several years. I obtained a PhD in Ancient Greek at Bryn Mawr College in 1995, when I began teaching at Laurier. My academic passion is the culture of Classical Athens, especially its drama and theatre. I have published three monographs, over two dozen refereed articles and book chapters, and as many encyclopedia articles, reviews and shorter pieces on Greek poetry and drama. You will find downloadable samples of my work, and a complete CV, at wlu-ca.academia.edu/JudithFletcher.

I teach courses in classical languages, ancient history, literature, and gender and sexuality in Greece and Rome. I recently developed a course on crime and justice in the ancient world that examines the development of legal processes associated with crimes, such as homicide, and their representation in Athenian drama. I also have a long-standing interest in the Classical Reception, specifically how ancient literature is reinterpreted in contemporary culture including novels, films, and children’s culture. This too is the topic of a new course that I have developed. I have a book in progress on the underworld in contemporary culture.

Academic service includes involvement in the Classical Association of Canada. I am also associate editor (Greek Literature) for the CAC’s internationally renowned journal, Phoenix.

My recent SSHRC award funds a project on Law and Justice in Aristophanes
